After Augie passed, the thought of getting another dog didn’t occur to me. I couldn’t bear the thought of experiencing the same devastating loss again. All that changed a year and a half later when I saw an “adoption weekend” advertisement for the Animal Shelter of San Jose.  My longtime boyfriend, Ed, suggested we go, as he had noticed both our house and me were lacking something without any animals.

During the open house, we saw lots of chihuahuas and pit bulls. Since this was supposed to be Ed’s dog, he visited all the small dogs while I had my eye on a pit-bull named Gouda. We left after an hour or so. That night, Ed kept talking about a Chihuahua he met who he could not stop thinking about, so I suggested we go back the following day to see him.

The next day, we arrived and found the Chihuahua (named Gitzit) hadn’t been adopted. During our socialization, Gitzit seemed a bit standoffish and timid. Although I never imagined myself with a Chihuahua, we left with our new fawn adoptee who we renamed Scooby.  Mr. Scoobs, as I call him, changed our lives.  His eyes alone are chocolate brown pools of affection.  After 3 ½ years with Scoobs, I can tell you how wonderful and loving this little breed is.

Taking walks, eating and going to work with Ed or to Bella with me are his favorite things to do. He knows my schedule, which always includes a walk in the morning after my workout.  If, for some reason, he has to stay home or I am unable to walk him, he hunkers down and looks at me with those eyes. It’s enough to make me stop in my tracks and adjust my schedule to accommodate him.

He is content wherever his family is. I don’t know if shelter dogs know this too, but the bond they build with people who give them love and a safe place to live is truly strong.

Needless to say, Scooby opened my heart again and enabled us to welcome two other dogs as well.  You will meet Bentley and Lucy in the coming weeks.

Each time we share a story, I get more excited about our upcoming shopping day where a portion of the days’ proceeds will benefit a local animal shelter.  Please stay tuned!
