Bentley, also known as “Moose” or “Baby Girl” was named after my favorite car. A chance meeting outside Bella with Baby, a great Dane puppy, started my obsession with this beautiful, giant breed. The gangly youngster, white with black spots, reminded me so much of Augie, my large Dalmatian who passed away a few years back.
I couldn’t get Baby out of my mind but faced an enormous hurdle: convincing my boyfriend that the dog to heal my broken heart happened to be a giant! It took a month or so but eventually Ed agreed, especially after meeting the puppy who kicked off my “Great Dane Fever”. Since Augie was white with black spots, we decided to adopt a Blue Dane after seeing one at a park in Los Gatos. We preferred a rescue dog but, concerned about the health and history of a dog this size, we researched a great breeder in Florida who specialized in blues. Bentley arrived at 8 weeks and just celebrated her 2nd birthday on March 11th.At 130 pounds, she has a stunning steel-gray coat and beautiful blue/gray eyes. Her favorite things are daily walks with her dog trainer and walker (the stellar Jenna McDonald and Sheila Gibson) and just hanging around the house. Even better, though, is when her daddy takes her to work. She runs the office and demands attention from everyone passing by!
Although she has lots of fun with her petite siblings (our Chihuahuas), we agreed that our next rescue dog will be big enough to handle more energetic play time. I’ve met several Great Danes now and am surprised by the big personality and boundless energy in massive beauties who still think they’re lap dogs. If my little ones are on the couch with me, Bentley is too! Although her size isn’t for everyone, she is perfect for us! I only wish Great Danes had a much longer life expectancy.
Soon, you will meet Lucy, the Chihuahua we most recently rescued from a Los Angeles animal shelter. At the same time, we will announce a special shopping day where a percentage of the proceeds will benefit a local animal shelter. I hope you can participate and help us help organizations provide loving homes for so many animals in need!! xoxoDeb
